Weekend Wait Times have seemed relentless for Paris public transport users. Recognizing the jam-packed platforms and carriages, Ile-de-France Mobilités (IDFM), the regional transport network operator, is stepping up. In a recent statement, IDFM put RATP, the operator of a portion of the capital's and its suburbs' public transport, on notice to enhance weekend metro service.
According to IDFM, weekend Paris metro usage swelled by a staggering 20% from 2019. RATP expeditiously upped its game, and visitors to line 12 have already experienced the improvement since March. Now, lucky travelers enjoy 4% more trains, resulting in an average station wait time reduction of 15 seconds. For example, weekend afternoons now see travelers waiting just 3 minutes and 15 seconds, instead of the previous 3 minutes and 30 seconds.
Get Ready for a Shortened Week 🤔 🕒 But wait, there's more! The four-day workweek is gaining momentum at RATP – could it catch on in Paris?
More Lines to Receive Extra Service
Line 12 is ahead of the pack, but it won't be a loner for long. Starting in early May, lines 5 and 9 will gradually see a 5% and 8% weekend service increase, respectively. This benefits users with train intervals decreasing by a hefty 1 minute and 40 seconds. And get this – line 5's weekday service will receive a boost from October 2025, focusing on the 6 pm to closing time slot, assures IDFM.
Regarding weekends, line 11 is setting its sights on increased service following the September school return. Other coveted lines including 2, 3, 7, and 8 are also on track to join the fun – with plans in the works for implementation in late 2026, according to IDFM.
🌃 Metro Fun Fact: Established on July 19, 1900, Paris's metro system is the second-oldest worldwide, right after the London Underground.
stay tuned for additional updates, as current modernization and maintenance endeavors on lines like 6, 10, 3, and 7 may cause temporary service disruptions – although these efforts don't necessarily mean increased weekend service but instead adjustments to accommodate the work. 🚧 #metroupdates #paris411
❓Q: What other lines can commuters expect to see improved weekend service?📜A: Commuters can anticipate lines 2, 3, 7, and 8 receiving increased service, with implementation planned for late 2026, according to IDFM.
