Engage in a Spectrum of Crafts and Activities {Exploring Colors through the Brown Bear Series}

=====================================================================

In this week's edition of our Learning Colours series, inspired by the beloved book Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?, we delve into teaching young children about the colour blue. This series emphasises hands-on, creative, and sensory experiences that make learning enjoyable and memorable.

One such activity is the creation of a blue picture, where children decorate a page themed around blue. They can finger paint blue raindrops falling from a cloud, either a printed cutout or one they draw themselves. This activity is part of a colour book, with each page representing a different colour for repeated visual reinforcement.

Reading colour-themed books, including those about blue, is another effective approach. By encouraging children to spot blue objects around them and relate them to the story, we foster recognition and vocabulary development.

Interactive videos and songs designed for toddlers and preschoolers provide visual and auditory exposure to the colour blue, reinforcing learning through songs and visual examples.

Color mixing experiments are also an essential part of the learning process. While broader than just blue, many activities encourage children to explore blue as a primary color, mixing it with others to see secondary and tertiary colors form. These experiments promote scientific thinking alongside color recognition.

Connecting blue to real-world objects, such as the sky and the sea, helps make learning more concrete and engaging. This connection aids in the recognition and understanding of the colour blue.

Recently, our author created a container filled with interesting blue items for her son's Thomas the train themed party. She used blue crayons, pencils, paint, and glitter glue for the handprint horse artwork, which involved using a roller to spread blue paint and glitter glue. After drying, the handprint horse was glued to some patterned paper, resulting in a finished artwork that, while not a gallery piece, looks special due to the glitter catching the light.

This week's focus in the series was on the blue horse and other blue things. The author also made an easy jigsaw puzzle for the son's Thomas themed party and bought handprint horse card templates for use this week.

Remember, the core activities for teaching blue based on this series include colour-themed art projects (such as the handprint horse), storytelling with colour emphasis, visual and auditory media, and interactive exploration with real-world objects and color mixing.

On a suggestive note, children could extend their exploration of blue beyond art and books, delving into fashion-and-beauty with blue-hued clothing and accessories, or foods and drinks containing blueberries or coconut water. In the realm of home-and-garden, they might admire plants with blue flowers or, for something cozier, curl up with a blue throw for story time. Lastly, one could enhance their entertainment activities by reading a captivating blue-themed book or listening to soothing blue notes from a saxophonist, evoking an impressive and memorable lifestyle experience.
