Elli's Bidirectional Charging Pilot to Cut EV Charging Costs by 75%
RWE's subsidiary, Elli, is making waves in Europe's energy transition. The company is conducting innovative projects to analyze the regional scalability of bidirectional charging. Its goal? To integrate these solutions into a 'Managed Battery Network' (MBN) for stable renewable energy use and accelerated energy transition.
Elli's Managed Battery Network optimizes renewable energy use through wholesale energy trading. The company is launching its large-scale energy storage business with the Elli PowerCenter in Salzgitter, slated for completion in December. This facility will house bidirectional chargers that connect home solar and electric vehicles (EVs) with a modular software platform. This innovative setup enables EVs to power households with self-generated solar energy.
At IAA Mobility 2025, Elli will launch a pilot project for bidirectional charging of electric vehicles in private households. This project, set to reduce charging costs by up to 75%, is a significant step towards a sustainable energy future. By the end of the decade, Elli aims to integrate hundreds of thousands of EV batteries across Europe into its Managed Battery Network.
Elli's EVs, built on the MEB platform, are technically capable of enabling DC bidirectional charging. The company is inviting its customers and OTOVO's solar panel customers to apply for the bidirectional charging pilot project starting in December 2025. Recruitment for pilot participants in Germany has already begun, marking a significant milestone in Elli's journey towards a more sustainable energy landscape.
