Eco-Friendly Wrapping Techniques Learned at Furoshiki Workshop
In the rich tapestry of Japanese culture, the traditional art of furoshiki stands as a testament to the country's enduring history and commitment to sustainability. With roots dating back to the Nara period (710–794 AD), this wrapping cloth has evolved from a practical means of carrying clothes to public baths during the Edo period (1603–1868 AD) into an artful and culturally significant method of wrapping gifts and transporting goods.
Furoshiki embodies the essence of Japanese values, emphasising aesthetics, reusability, and mindfulness. This centuries-old tradition reflects the nation's respect for presentation, minimal waste, and sustainable living. Furoshiki's versatile folding and knotting methods allow objects of different shapes and sizes to be securely wrapped without the need for adhesive tape or disposable packaging materials.
The upcoming workshop aims to introduce participants to this eco-friendly wrapping technique, offering a unique opportunity to learn sustainable wrapping techniques using the traditional Japanese art of furoshiki. The 1.5-hour hands-on session, scheduled between 4:30 PM and 6:00 PM, will cover various wrapping techniques such as box wrapping, bottle wrapping, and shopping bags.
During the workshop, participants will be guided by an instructor who will introduce folding and knotting techniques, providing personal guidance to ensure mastery. Each participant will receive two beautiful printed furoshiki cloths (19.5" x 19.5" and 27.5" x 27.5" sizes) to take home and use for their gift-giving needs.
The workshop also offers a chance to delve into the history and culture of furoshiki, providing insights into this historical practice rooted in daily life and bathhouse culture. Participants will not only learn a new skill but also contribute to a more sustainable future by choosing furoshiki as an alternative to modern disposable wrapping paper and plastic bags.
Before the workshop commences, a check-in and food tasting session will take place between 3:30 PM and 4:00 PM. Food items will be available for tasting during this time. The lecture and workshop introduction will follow between 4:00 PM and 4:30 PM, setting the stage for an enriching and educational experience.
