Düsseldorf to Transform Fairground Parking Lot into Venue for Large-Scale Open-Air Events
Düsseldorf city council has approved a plan to transform a spacious parking lot near the fairgrounds into a venue for large open-air events, hosting up to 80,000 visitors at a time. This development could potentially cater to six annual events in the future, expanding the city's event locations.
The proposed ground, situated in proximity to the fairgrounds, is set to become an open-air event space, bolstering the city's event portfolio. The city council has initiated a process for public involvement and has deemed it necessary to uphold nature and noise protection regulations. Accordingly, only essential tree felling will occur, and compensatory planting has been planned to mitigate environmental concerns.
Originally, the city aimed to open the new grounds with an AC/DC concert scheduled for July 8. However, the event was recently shifted to the Merkur Spiel-Arena due to unknown reasons.
Of historical significance, a concert featuring Ed Sheeran had been planned for 2018 on the same grounds, which sold 85,000 tickets. The event faced public outcry due to the proposed felling of 104 trees. The plan ultimately failed due to local politics, compelling Sheeran to transfer the concert to Gelsenkirchen.
Messe Düsseldorf, a prominent exhibition center, encompasses approximately 262,000 square meters of hall space and 43,000 square meters of outdoor space, hosting approximately 50 exhibitions annually. Notable trade fairs hosted at Messe Düsseldorf include drupa, the CARAVAN SALON, and K, the world's foremost trade fair for the plastics and rubber sector. Additionally, Messe Düsseldorf is engaged in sustainability initiatives, such as introducing reusable cup systems at events to promote eco-friendly practices.
The Community policy for the new open-air event venue requires a sustainable lifestyle, emphasizing eco-friendly practices like the use of reusable cups for events. As this venue near the fairgrounds expands the city's event locations, it may also provide opportunities for vocational training in outdoor-living and home-and-garden fields, enhancing the community's knowledge and skills.
