Düsseldorf Gardens Open to the Public: A Chance to Explore and Learn
From the 10th to the 11th of May, several gardens across Düsseldorf and the Rhineland will open their gates to the public as part of the "Open Garden Gate" event. This yearly occasion offers a unique opportunity to learn about the diversity of private gardens in the city and gain inspiration for your own green spaces.
One of the gardens that can be visited is the VHS-Biogarden in Südpark Düsseldorf. Spanning 3500 square meters, this garden includes a herb garden, nature garden/nature-friendly garden, utilitarian garden, and perennial garden. Visitors can explore the garden on Saturday, 10.5., from 11 to 16 o'clock, and on Sunday, 11.5., from 13 to 17 o'clock.
Another noteworthy garden is Michael Borowiak's 600 square meter garden, which will be open on Saturday, 10.5., from 13 to 17 o'clock, and on Sunday, 11.5., from 13 to 17 o'clock.
In addition to these gardens, Kai Habermehl and Dr. Christiane Gerlach's 200 square meter garden will be open on Sunday, 11.5., from 12 to 18 o'clock, featuring an architectural garden/formal garden and a freely designed garden. Klaus-Peter Heussler's 600 square meter garden in Wersten will also open its doors on Sunday, 11.5., from 12 to 18 o'clock, showcasing a nature garden, nature-friendly garden, utilitarian garden, and themed garden.
For those interested in utilitarian or herb gardens particularly, the Botanical Garden on the university grounds has a known apothecary herb section, which aligns with utilitarian (useful plants) and herb garden types. The garden is free to enter and is a great place for strolls and study of plants in greenhouses and outdoor sections.
The oldest public park in Germany, Hofgarten Düsseldorf, is another green space worth visiting. While not specifically a herb or utilitarian garden, its natural setting supports biodiversity and nature-friendly visitation.
Visitors can exchange ideas and knowledge, and gain inspiration for their own gardens during this event. Düsseldorf is collaborating with the "Open Garden Gate" event organizers, the Stiftung Schloss Dyck, the city of Bonn, and the German Society for Garden Art and Landscape Culture in the northern and southern Rhineland.
