Duisburg's 'Learn to Swim' Project Teaches Over 1,000 Children

Duisburg has successfully launched its 'Duisburg learns to swim' project, aiming to teach swimming to primary school children. Over 1,000 youngsters have participated or are set to join, with the initiative gaining significant support from local authorities and businesses.

The project, reaching approximately 20% of a graduating class, offers free swimming lessons. Mayor Sören Link, who supports the initiative, believes swimming is an essential life skill. The first course series saw over 500 children participate, with another 500 starting in the second series.

A painting competition, 'Duisburg learns to swim', was held to engage the children. It required participants to depict the ten swimming rules in their artwork. Over 140 entries were received, with ten winners receiving prizes at the Rhein-Ruhr bath. The top prize, the 'Golden Swimming Ticket', offers a year of free entry to all municipal baths and free swimming badge acquisition.

The 'Duisburg learns to swim' project has been a resounding success, with widespread participation and support. Marcel Groß of Sparkasse Duisburg's sports foundation, which contributes 100,000 euros annually, praised the creativity and number of entries in the painting competition. The initiative continues to promote swimming skills and water safety among the city's youth.
