Nestled in the picturesque landscape of Western Massachusetts, the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival has undergone a significant transformation. The reimagined Doris Duke Theatre, destroyed by fire in 2020, has been rebuilt, boasting a larger scale and technological sophistication that reflects the Festival's commitment to counter-narratives about culture and identity.

Designed by Dutch firm Mecanoo, led by architect Francine Houben, in collaboration with Marvel (architecture and landscape), Charcoalblue (theater and acoustics), and Allegrone Companies (construction), the new theatre spans approximately 20,000 sq. ft., more than double the original 8,500 sq. ft. footprint. This expansion allows for increased audience capacity, ranging from 220 to 400 seats, while maintaining the intimacy and simplicity of the previous venue.

The theatre's design preserves its connection with the natural setting, featuring green rooftops and potential rainwater harvesting systems. The architecture also emphasises multiple entrances, lobbies, and connections with the surrounding landscape, providing warm-up and rehearsal spaces, exhibitions, and pre-show talks for the artists.

One of the most striking features of the new Doris Duke Theatre is its focus on technological advancement. It is envisioned as a "makerspace" to integrate cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, extended reality, robotics, spatial audio, and interactive video content. This positions it as one of the world’s most technologically advanced dance theaters focused on live performance innovation.

Meanwhile, at the Perles Family Studio, nature-focused landscapes designed by Indigenous artists Misty Cook, Kathi Arnold, and Andre Strongbearheart Gaines Jr. celebrate indigenous knowledge. The timber-clad performance space, constructed from spruce-pine-fir blend CLT panels, sourced from Canada, contains an overhead steel catwalk fitted with livestream and AI capabilities. A communal fire pit in front of the eastern entrance reflects the cultural traditions of the people who first inhabited the land. The thermally-treated pine facade of the Perles Family Studio is composed of seven horizontal bands, referencing the indigenous concept that every decision should benefit the next seven generations.

The Ted Shawn Theatre, designed by Joseph Franz, opened in 1942 as the first American performance space designed specifically for dance. Shawn, a modern dance pioneer, bought the farm in 1931 and founded the Denishawn Company. Shawn and his wife Ruth St. Denis parted ways in 1931, and Shawn established an all-male dance troupe at Jacob's Pillow.

The site is situated on a mountainous landscape with beavers, bears, and forest trails. The Perles Family Studio's central quad is surrounded by a sculptural 'scramble' of locally-sourced stone, providing space for outdoor rehearsals and celebrations. Photographs of these stunning structures were taken by Iwan Baan.

Jacob's Pillow has a rich history of championing counter-narratives about culture and identity. This reimagining of the Doris Duke Theatre and the addition of the Perles Family Studio further solidify its position as a bridge between past traditions and future innovations in dance.
