Dog detests nail trimming? Employ this trainer's clever workaround

Many dog owners find themselves in a familiar predicament when it comes to their pet's nails. Struggling to clip them can be a common issue, and for some, the solution may lie in filing them instead.

One certified dog trainer, San Choi from Ruff Roll Academy, has explained a simple method for filing a dog's nails using a scratchpad. The Hamiledyi Dog Scratch Pad for Nails, measuring 19.69" x 9.06", is suitable for small to medium breeds and comes with two replacement sheets of sandpaper.

The process begins by introducing the scratchpad to the dog. You can attach a frisbee or a cutting board to the scratchpad with adhesive spray to make it more appealing. Start with the non-abrasive side of the scratchpad and reward the dog with a treat when they touch it.

When the dog is comfortable, the abrasive side of the scratchpad can be used, with alternating between both sides as an option. Treats can be used to reinforce the behavior of scratching the scratchpad, and by saying a marker word like "yes" when the dog scratches, you can teach them to scratch more.

Gradually progress to your dog scratching the scratchpad on their own. It's important to ensure the dog associates treats with touching the object. Choi explains that this positive reinforcement is key to the success of the method.

For older or younger dogs with soft or brittle nails, a nail file can be a useful alternative. Consulting a vet if unsure about anything is always recommended.
