Discovering the art scene at Frieze and Kiaf perplexing? Here's what to focus on during Seoul's major art week.
Frieze Seoul and KIAF Seoul, two premier international contemporary art fairs in South Korea, are once again gracing the COEX convention center in Gangnam District, southern Seoul. Launched in 2022 and founded in 2002, respectively, these fairs have evolved from early tension to a more balanced and symbiotic partnership.
Frieze Seoul, originating from the established Frieze fairs in London, New York, and Los Angeles, emphasises Asia's dynamic contemporary art scene. Highlights of Frieze Seoul 2025 include a large-scale commissioned work by artist duo Moon Kyungwon and Jeon Joonho, a new site-specific installation by Liam Gillick, and sections like Frieze Masters showcasing postwar and modern Asian art. The Focus Asia section presents solo exhibitions of emerging Asian artists.
KIAF Seoul, historically the country’s longest-running art fair, focuses on contemporary art. It aims to foster Korean collectors and connect Korean contemporary art to the world stage. Kiaf Seoul 2025 features a rich array of galleries and artworks representing Korea’s art development over decades.
Notable artworks on display at Frieze Seoul 2025 include Yoo Young-kuk's "dansaekhwa "Work" (1968), Sin Wai Kin's "Asleep" (2024), and Park Seo-bo's "Ecriture No. 220715" (2022). Kiaf Seoul 2025 showcases works such as "PK95008" (1995) by Kim Tschang-yeul (1929-2021) and "Waterfall on Colors" (2023) by Hiroshi Senju.
These fairs, anchoring Seoul as a major hub in the Asian and global contemporary art market, demonstrate the historical progression, contemporary vibrancy, and international dialogue of Seoul’s—and broadly Asia’s—art scene through a mix of historic, modern, and emerging artworks.
In parallel with these fairs, Design Miami's inaugural Seoul exhibition spotlights Korean design icons, bridging Korean tradition and global design discourse. The collaborative dynamic between Frieze Seoul and KIAF Seoul has evolved from early tension to a more coordinated partnership, with staggered VIP schedules enhancing visitor flow to both. Together, they underscore Seoul's position as a significant player in the global art market.
