Discovered: Hidden Field of Poppies Blooming Secretly in Los Angeles County

Scarcity of wildflowers this season, largely attributed to the arid winter. However, a breathtaking carpet of poppies emerges in the minuscule Elizabeth Lake community.

Switching Gears: Your Wildflower Guide for Southern California's 2025 Blooms

Discovered: Hidden Field of Poppies Blooming Secretly in Los Angeles County

Springtime in SoCal means one thing for me - road-tripping to capture the vivid wildflower scenes painting the landscapes. This year, however, the drought has taken a toll, stripping popular spots like Arvin Cross, Walker Canyon, and Antelope Valley of their usual vibrant hues. But then, a whisper about a poppy paradise in the diminutive community of Elizabeth Lake sparked hope.

Grabbing my camera, I embarked on a two-hour drive to this hidden gem, located south of Lancaster. To my delight, the south-facing hillsides were bathed in a sea of golden and orange poppies, creating an almost electrifying atmosphere—a perfect remedy for the season's disappointments. The hills were sparsely populated, with only a handful of people snapping photos and attempting the steep hike to the hilltop.

The captivating scene can be found at the intersection of Elizabeth Lake and Munz Ranch roads. You'll find ample parking by the side of the road, next to the poppies themselves.

If you decide to visit the Elizabeth Lake fields, note the following tips for a memorable and responsible experience:

  1. Time your visit within the next two to three weeks for the best display.
  2. Respect the locals and follow speed limits.
  3. Utilize the crosswalk when crossing the road.
  4. Stay on the marked trails to preserve the flowers and their surroundings.
  5. Take plenty of photographs and leave no trace.
