Debut of narrative-focused VHS: The craft of storytelling elevated as a life's work
The Bamberg City Adult Education Center (vhs) is set to begin its 2025/26 fall-winter semester with a special matinee on September 21, 2025, at 11 am. The event, titled 'Much to Tell,' will take place both on-site and online in the historic Great Hall of the Old E-Werk.
John von Duffel, a renowned writer, dramaturg, and the new intendant of the ETA Hoffmann Theater, will be the guest of honour at the matinee. He will read selected texts and discuss the significance of literature and theater as a reflection of life with Dr. Anna Scherbaum, vhs director.
The theme of the matinee is inspired by medieval hours books and John von Düffel's work, 'The Little and the Essential.' The compositions aim to draw a connection between personal experience and the power of literature.
Jochen Neurath, a composer from Bamberg and the recipient of the 2025 Cultural Promotion Award, will musically accompany the matinee. He will present excerpts from his piano cycle, 'Hours Book - 12 Meditations,' which is also inspired by medieval hours books and John von Düffel's work.
The event after the official part will include a small reception with drinks and snacks. The matinee is public and registration is not required.
During the matinee, Dr. Scherbaum will provide an outlook on the new semester program. The adult education center offers around 850 courses, tours, lectures, and events in the new semester. Highlights and news for the coming months will be presented.
The reading by John von Duffel intends to reinterpret the seemingly obvious. The matinee will be a unique blend of literature, music, and discussion, offering a thought-provoking start to the new semester.
For those unable to attend in person, the link for the online broadcast will be published on www.vhs-bamberg.de with course number 0500. Join us for an enlightening and inspiring start to the 2025/26 fall-winter semester at the Bamberg City Adult Education Center.
