Dresden's Digital Cityscape: A Visual Treasure Trove at Your Fingertips
Step into the heart of Dresden with the City Archive's newest offering - a digital gallery brimming with old and new images of the city. Now accessible to all, this bountiful collection, aptly named "Cityscape Photography," features approximately 24,000 digitized historical photos and over 8,000 stunning new images by renowned photographer Albrecht Voß, captured between 2021 and 2023. The project's ultimate goal? To immortalize the architectural beauty of Dresden for everyone to embrace.
Prof. Thomas Kübler, the City Archive's esteemed director, revels in the project's completion, praising it as "a unique and essential source for cityscape documentation, a testament to the exceptional collaborative effort that has brought it to life."
This project takes inspiration from nearly two centuries of cityscape documentation in Dresden. Following an exhaustive inventory analysis in 2017 and 2018, the seeds for the revival of the Cityscape Photography project were sown. This new collection transcends geographical boundaries, providing a visual representation of every district and serving as a valuable research resource. With these virtual tours, explorations of Dresden's urban landscape are possible anytime, hassle-free.
The project also marks the first comprehensive, topographical documentation of Dresden. Cityscapes consist of buildings, streets, squares, green spaces, distinctive landmarks, mountains, rivers, and more, all contributing to ever-evolving urban landscapes. Capturing the evolution of districts holds invaluable significance for urban history, sciences, public relations, future city planning, and today's introspective society. Photography, for its ability to vividly depict change, renewal, and transformation, proves the ideal medium for this endeavor. Furthermore, the technical requisites and long-term preservation of these images are easily achievable.
An accompanying exhibition at the City Archive, Elisabeth-Boer-Straße 1, delves deeper into the historical background of cityscape documentation and showcases a select collection of Albrecht Voß's photographs captured in various city districts. The display extends until Friday, March 22, 2024. The exhibition welcomes visitors on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 am to 4 pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 am to 5 pm, and Fridays from 9 am to 12 pm, with complimentary admission.
