City of Biebrich Launches Roadways Experiment

The beautiful Rhine banks of Wiesbaden's Biebrich district will be transformed into a pedestrian and bicycle-friendly haven for four weekends in August 2025. Starting from Friday evening and lasting until Sunday night, motorized traffic will be restricted in a bid to promote sustainable mobility and improve the quality of life [1].

The car-free zone, stretching from Parkfeld to Wilhelm-Kopp-Straße, will include the area between Biebricher Schloss and Zollspeicher. This trial aims to reduce car traffic along the Rhine promenade, encourage walking and cycling, and improve the quality of public space along the river [1].

The local council of Biebrich made the decision for this traffic trial back in March. The programme will be organised by the BieNe neighbourhood network, the BIG business association, and the local council. Residents will remain accessible via Rathausstraße, and delivery services and caregivers will have access under the premise of "local traffic only" [1].

Bus lines such as the 9, 14, and N3 will be affected by the car-free zone. Bus lines 9 and 14 will take detours, and the "Schloss Biebrich" bus stop will be temporarily suspended. ESWE Verkehr will provide information about detours and replacement stops [1].

The Biebricher Rheinufertage will bring music, togetherness, and interactive actions to the area after around 20 years. The Vinothon, a popular running event, has been postponed to 2026 [1].

Wiesbaden is participating in the "European Mobility Week" from September 16th to 22nd, but the Superblock Sunday event has been cancelled. The car-free zone in Wiesbaden Biebrich is part of an effort to make mobility more sustainable, livable, and fair, following examples set by cities worldwide [1].

The area in front of Biebricher Castle will be completely closed to motorized traffic. The car-free zone will be in effect from August 2nd to 25th, from Friday at 6 pm to Sunday at 10 pm [1].
