On the eve of major religious holidays, over 50 bells from ten inner-city churches harmoniously ring out across the city - on the eve of the first Advent, Christmas Eve, and the Saturday before Easter Sunday and Pentecost. This Saturday marks a new milestone with a fresh composition added to the mix.
Popular spots like the Paulskirche, Katharinenkirche at the Hauptwache, and Old Nikolaikirche on the Römerberg join forces with the Imperial Cathedral's nine bells, including the city's most celebrated and hefty bell, the Gloriosa, weighing a staggering 11,961 kilograms.
A More Engrossing Experience
The upcoming Grand City Chimes performance, set for 4:30 to 5:00 PM this Saturday, is the creative work of talented members from the Ensemble Modern, an international group of soloists residing in Frankfurt. Proudly declaring its intent to be immersive, the Ensemble Modern's composition, christened "supra urbem" ("above the city"), will be played annually on the Saturday before Pentecost. Traditional tunes created by Mainzer Glockensachverständiger Paul Smets in 1954 will still be performed on other occasions.
Intriguingly, this Saturday's performance will begin with the bells chiming individually - from the highest to the lowest tones - before uniting into the cherished overall sound.
