Church Rebuilding Project: Authority and Ambition

The First Christian Church of Somerset, KY, initially sought to repair their choir microphones and floor pockets when they partnered with JCA Media, a leading AV integrator in Kentucky, particularly known for its work in houses of worship. However, a comprehensive AV upgrade was in store for the church.

Upon examination, JCA Media identified a need for substantial improvements beyond simple repairs. These enhancements were aimed at improving both the audience's and technology operators' experiences—all of whom were volunteers within the church.

"Originally, the request was for choir mics and floor boxes," said Alex Peake, project manager for JCA Media. "But it evolved into a request for replacing projectors, house and theatrical lights, and a complete overhaul of the AV network."

Outdated Technology Upgraded

Before the upgrade, the church relied on old technology, including a dimming system over 25 years old, antiquated audio setup, and a projector system that barely sufficed during services. The PA system functioned but required significant improvements.

Volunteer property chair, elder, and treasurer Keith Kissinger admitted, "The upgrade was necessary because more lights were not working than were functioning." He added, "We usually dim the lights for prayers, and it had become so dim constantly."

To rectify the lighting issue, JCA Media installed 71 LED house lights and 16 Chauvet Ovation E-260WW LED fixtures for bright output and smooth dimming. The ChamSys Quick Q10 compact lighting console was selected for its user-friendly, icon-based interface. Doug Fleener Design optical splitters, preset stations, and a LynTec RPC remote control breaker panel were also included for seamless system control.

A More Professional Audio Experience

Although the PA system was not replaced, the amplification and control systems required improvement. To provide a superior audio experience during services, amplifiers were upgraded to LEA Professional amplifiers, which feature cloud-based monitoring. Four Earthworks Choir microphones, Shure PSM 900 in-ear monitors, and QLXD wireless units were also included.

Due to the church's unique concrete slab configuration, custom ACE Backstage floor boxes were designed to accommodate the necessary stage I/O. DSP tuning inside the LEA amplifiers optimized audio performance, while an Allen & Heath GX4816 stage box improved FOH I/O and stage connectivity, with two DX ports for two DX168 boxes on stage.

Improved Image and Power Management

Antiquated projector systems were replaced with Epson 13,000-lumen laser projectors, offering bright, clear visuals throughout the room. Two rear projectors were replaced with an 86-inch LG commercial display to cover the visuals on the rear stage.

An RTI control system provided centralized management, while enhanced power sequencing was implemented using Furman power conditioners. This safeguarded equipment from power surges and ensured proper startup and shutdown procedures. In houses of worship, where technology often operates for extended periods, this prolonged the lifespan of the equipment.

A LynTec RPC system offered DMX-controlled relay switching for efficient power usage and prevention of premature wear and tear. "We love LynTec because it has multiple control protocols, and one of them is DMX," said Peake. "With a preset station on the wall, I can hit 'off,' it sends the command via DMX to lower the fixtures, and powers them down completely-saving energy and extending their lifespan."

The new audio infrastructure also supported the church's streaming needs by rerouting audio from the console for a broadcast mix into their existing streaming system.

A Seamless Transformation

JCA Media completed the installation over three weeks, minimizing disruption to church services, and the new systems were operational in time for Feb. 16 services. The installation process was relatively smooth, but an atrium lift was required to safely install and adjust the new lighting fixtures due to the sanctuary's high ceilings.

The church's leadership was impressed with the change. "Wow, what a difference," said Kissinger. "It was beyond what words could describe."

JCA Media is now training the church's volunteer tech staff to operate the new AV network. "The sound system is so over the top compared to what we were working with," said Kissinger. "The sound booth crew are so looking forward to being able to overwhelm the congregation with the magic it is capable of."

In many cases, JCA Media begins collaborating with clients on small projects. As clients realize the benefits of upgrades and enhancements, they often desire a comprehensive transformation like the one accomplished at the First Christian Church of Somerset. What began as a simple microphone replacement evolved into a complete transformation that will enable the church to offer an enhanced worship experience for years to come.

"The upgrades to the First Christian Church's AV system didn't just stop at the choir microphones and floor pockets; they encompassed a full transition of the home-and-garden lifestyle, technology, and even the lifestyle of the church's volunteers," said Alex Peake, project manager for JCA Media.

"As a result of the AV overhaul, we've gone from outdated projectors and dimming systems to the latest LED lights and Epson laser projectors, providing a significant improvement in both lighting and visuals," shared Keith Kissinger, volunteer property chair, elder, and treasurer of the church.
