Chicago Breaks Ground on Nation's First Large-Scale Quantum Computing Facility
A Silicon Valley startup, PsiQuantum, has begun construction of the nation's first large-scale quantum computing facility in Chicago. The Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park aims to make Chicago a hub for quantum computing research and create hundreds of jobs. However, the project has sparked concerns and calls for greater transparency among some Southeast Side residents.
PsiQuantum broke ground for the facility, which will serve as the anchor tenant for the park. The project has received support from local schools, with Bowen High School receiving $10,000 from PsiQuantum for science education equipment. Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker praised the project, emphasizing its potential for job creation, economic growth, and research in various fields.
However, some residents have expressed concerns about potential environmental contamination, higher energy bills, displacement, and lack of local job opportunities. The park's developer, Related Midwest, has addressed these concerns by stating its intention to enroll the entire site in a voluntary Site Remediation Program to ensure full compliance with environmental laws and regulations. A coalition of residents is pushing for a Community Benefits Agreement to ensure protections for existing residents and community investment.
Quantum computing projects are also underway in New York City and Brisbane, Australia, with PsiQuantum involved in the latter. The Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park plans to create hundreds of jobs, but it's unclear how many will be permanent or accessible to residents without college degrees.
While the Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park promises significant economic growth and job creation, some Southeast Side residents remain concerned about potential negative impacts. As the project progresses, stakeholders are working to address these concerns and ensure the project benefits the local community.
