Living in Harmony: The Daily Life of Alois Penninger, the Hermit of Saalfelden

In the picturesque Austrian state of Salzburg, nestled high above the town of Saalfelden, lives Alois Penninger, a man who has chosen a life of solitude. Since 2022, he has resided in a hermitage, a 400-year-old structure that clings to the rock like a swallow's nest.

Each day, Alois's life begins at half past five. As the sun begins to peek over the horizon, he rises from his simple bed, marking the start of another day in his unique existence.

Alois's daily routine is both simple and profound. He spends his mornings, afternoons, and evenings tending to his estate, engaging in outdoor activities like hiking and gardening, and dedicating time to personal hobbies such as reading and cultural pursuits.

One of the most distinctive aspects of Alois's daily life is his commitment to the chapel. Three times a day, at 7:00 AM, 12:00 PM, and 7:00 PM, he rings the chapel bells, a tradition that has become an integral part of his routine.

However, life in the hermitage is not without its challenges. Alois does not have running water, and he relies on a wood stove to make his coffee each morning. Despite these hardships, he maintains a positive outlook, finding peace and contentment in his simple life.

During at least half the year, Alois opens his doors to guests, sharing his hermitage and his wisdom with those who seek a deeper understanding of solitude and simplicity. He welcomes visitors with open arms, offering them a glimpse into his unique way of life.

In a world that often moves too fast, Alois Penninger serves as a reminder of the beauty and simplicity of a slower pace. His life, lived in harmony with nature and his own rhythm, is a testament to the power of choice and the pursuit of a meaningful existence.
