Century-old Mauthe (FMS) wall clock featuring Adler gong

In the heart of picturesque Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, lies the quaint town of Parrsboro, home to a unique antique treasure. A Victorian-style German wall clock, produced by the renowned Mauthe company, has recently come to light, and its restoration is being documented in a three-part series.

The clock, made between 1890 and 1910, is a testament to Mauthe's craftsmanship during their golden era. Known for their quality movements and cases, some adorned with the distinctive Adler gong, this clock is no exception. The trademark and serial number confirm its origin, adding to its allure.

However, the clock is in need of restoration, with missing pieces and an alligator finish that has seen better days. Among the missing parts are a finial on the crown, a trim piece on the top of the access door, the wall stabilizers, and a corner piece on the left side of the crown. The dial, cellulose and very dark, is also unclear if it can be cleaned.

The clock's journey began when it was found on a local online forum for sale. It was later purchased from a family living in Truro, adding to its local provenance. Although no clear historical link exists between Mauthe and Parrsboro, the clock's new home in the popular Parrsboro Mansion, now a bed and breakfast destination, gives it a special connection to the town.

Part I of the series focuses on servicing the movement of the clock. The movement has run strong for the past 4 days and strikes as it should, but it will need a cleaning and possibly new bushings to ensure its longevity.

As the project progresses, Part II will delve into the servicing of the movement, while Part III will cover case repairs and refinishing. The hope is to restore this rare piece to its former glory, preserving a piece of Mauthe's rich history for future generations to appreciate.

Stay tuned for updates on this fascinating restoration journey, as we uncover the secrets and stories hidden within the ticking heart of this antique German wall clock.
