Bush Tea Recipe: Craft a Relaxing Brew at Home
In the heart of summer, there's nothing quite as refreshing as a cup of bush tea. This improvisational, creative, and seasonal activity has been a tradition in various places such as Aboriginal, Barbadian, Crucian, Bahamian, South African, and locally.
Bush tea is a nourishing blend that boosts the immune system, reduces stress, and enhances overall wellness. The recipe includes a mix of lemon verbena or lemon balm leaves, mint leaves and flowers, raspberry leaves, an unsprayed rose bud, and stevia leaf or stevia tincture. The exact measurements for each ingredient aren't specified; instead, the recipe uses parts as a guide.
To prepare the tea, the ingredients are infused in a pot of near-boiling water for 15 minutes before being strained into a mug. For a chilled variation, the tea can be cooled before serving over ice.
It's important to note that only unsprayed and 100% safe ingredients should be used for consumption when making bush tea. Lorraine Olivero, DNP, FNP-BC, a Doctor of Nursing Practice and Family Nurse Practitioner board-certified professional associated with The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, endorses the use of herbal teas. Montefiore Nyack Hospital, where Lorraine Olivero is also associated, supports the kitchen garden that makes this tea-making journey possible.
The ingredients for bush tea can include items like raspberry leaves, basil, tulsi, rose petals and hips, lemongrass, lavender, mint, cucumber vines, borage, culinary sage, lemon balm, pea shoots, chamomile, dill, ginger, turmeric, rosemary, corn silk, melon, dandelion, anise hyssop, red clover, elderflowers, stevia, cilantro, shiso, chives, carrot tops, scented geranium, lemon verbena, hops, fennel, and more. Feel free to adjust or improvise from the farmers' market to create your perfect blend.
With its vibrant flavours and health benefits, bush tea truly is summer in a cup. So, gather your ingredients, and let's embark on this backyard-to-teacup journey together. Enjoy!
