Fresh Scoops Expanding: Cool Kugeln Ice Cream Parlor Comes to Wolfenbüttel
Joana Macenauer, a 26-year-old with a knack for sweet treats, is making a splash in Braunschweig and Wolfenbüttel with her ice cream parlor, Cool Kugeln. The ice cream shop, located in Braunschweig's eastern ring area, is about to get a little busier, as Macenauer announced her expansion plans to open a second location in Wolfenbüttel starting June 17.
Having mastered the art of baking with her apprenticeship as a confectioner at the Ritz-Carlton in Wolfsburg and a subsequent master's degree, Macenauer's talent extends beyond cakes and tarts. In an interview with regionalHeute.de, she revealed her passion for ice cream, which started during her apprenticeship when it was part of her exam - and has since become an obsession.
What makes Cool Kugeln stand out is its innovative and recognizable flavors. While classics like vanilla and chocolate are always on offer, Macenauer delights customers with unique choices like lemon-thyme, bee sting, and cinnamon roll ice cream. All creations are made in-house, using as many regional ingredients as possible.
The delightful treat has been a hit in Braunschweig for a year, and Macenauer is eager to bring her ice cream to the people of Wolfenbüttel. She's in the process of redesigning the bakery branch on the Neue Straße to create a dedicated "Cool Kugeln" area. In winter, the ice cream offer will be replaced by traditional baked goods. If the success in Braunschweig is any indication, Macenauer's new shop is likely to be a hit in Wolfenbüttel too.
Apart from her ice cream ventures, Macenauer can be seen in the upcoming SAT.1 TV show, "Das große Backen," starting July 2. She competed against other professionals and spent several weeks filming in Berlin. While the show's winners remain a secret until broadcast, Macenauer had a great time and appreciated the camaraderie between participants.
For those who can't wait to try Joana Macenauer's unique flavors, here's a sneak peek at some popular ice cream combinations you can whip up at home:
- Strawberry Basil Ice Cream: A refreshing summer flavor with sweetness and freshness.
- Matcha Green Tea Ice Cream: A vibrant green ice cream with a subtle bitterness inspired by Japanese cuisine.

Joana Macenauer's upcoming ice cream parlor, Cool Kugeln, in Wolfenbüttel isn't just about cold treats; it's a chance to immerse oneself in a new lifestyle, with food-and-drink offerings that go beyond simple ice cream. As Macenauer expands her business, she also plans to cater to home-and-garden aficionados by redesigning the bakery branch in Wolfenbüttel to include a dedicated Cool Kugeln area, and replacing ice cream with traditional baked goods during winter months.
