Hey there! Have you ever wondered about the avian inhabitants of Berlin? From the swift Peregrine falcons to the eye-catching kingfishers, the city is teeming with a variety of bird species. But just how many are there? That's where you come in, fellow bird enthusiast!

The Nature Conservation Union Germany (NABU) and the Bavarian Nature Conservation Association (LBV) are once again inviting citizens to lend a helping hand this year. From May 9 to 11, it's time to dust off those binoculars and participate in the "Hour of Garden Birds" event.

If you're based in Berlin's city center, why not focus on the chaffinch? With its red face and yellow wing stripes, the chaffinch, or brambling, can be a lovely sight. Berlin's NABU chapter suggests keeping an eye out for these vibrant birds. Meanwhile, in the outskirts, you might spot the lively redstart, with its red tail that bobs up and down as it sings. Even common birds like sparrows and pigeons shouldn't be overlooked in your count!

Last year, a staggering 36,000 birds were counted in the city. But how many will you spot this year? Here's how to join in: simply find a quiet spot, be it your garden, park, or window, and note the highest number of each species you see within an hour. Then, submit your results online, via app, or by mail. Your findings will help the nature conservation associations understand current developments in the bird world and supplement official population trends. Last year, around 1,980 Berliners participated, counting a total of 36,000 birds.

Berlin's NABU groups are offering guided tours during the counting weekend. On May 11 at 9:00 AM, join the Lichtenberg district group in the Wartenberger field area. On May 10 at 2:00 PM, children can participate with their parents in the Rummelsburger Bucht.

So, grab your binoculars and let's get counting! And remember – every bird counts!
