Benjamin Ayres Discusses Embracing Humor and Radiating "Grand Golden Retriever Vibes" in Hallmark's 'The Santa Class'
In Hallmark's The Santa Class, Kimberly Sustad portrays Kate North, who assumes control of her father's struggling Santa School following his retirement and departure. Benjamin Ayers takes on the role of Dan, a Santa wannabe instructor from a rival school who is let go and turns to Kate for employment. Despite her reluctance, they join forces to boost the business. Close to initiating a training session for a fresh batch of Santa hopefuls, they encounter an amnesia-stricken Santa that could potentially be the genuine article. Kate and Dan collaborate to salvage the school and Christmas.
Ayers and Sustad lead an amusing cast of characters, and comedy abounds as they navigate the various obstacles and adventures faced by the Santas. Many of the performers are skilled improv actors, seamlessly exchanging quick wit.
Additionally, Paul Campbell contributes to the star-studded lineup with a unique and humorous performance. This fascinating role is certain to leave audiences in stitches.
According to Ayers, this character was enjoyable for him as he shared with Southern Living. “I haven't had the opportunity to just do pure comedy before. I adore doing comedy, and with the character of Dan, I had the chance to put all of my comedic skills and enthusiasm into play.”
Ayers' enthusiasm is evident from the moment he appears on screen, with his interpretation of Dan resembling if Buddy the Elf had a more business-oriented approach. A note from director Lucie Guest served as his inspiration for character development.
“On the second day, I remember, because Kate's character displays a strong cynicism and a desire to flee the situation. In one scene, I was portraying the character in a manner that complemented hers, focusing on the humor. Lucie suggested, ‘I have a single note for this entire character: portray him like a Golden Retriever with unbridled enthusiasm.’ This transformed everything for me. I ensured that I conveyed excitement even in challenging situations.”
He further explained, “Kim and I have known each other for years, providing us with an existing chemistry that we didn't need to build on camera. Then there was Paul, who was present for a significant portion of the production. During our first week, we took a ferry to the Sunshine Coast, where we filmed the entire camp sequence. It felt extraordinary from the outset, and I believe this production will become a hidden gem this year.”
As with any Hallmark production, there is also a heartfelt aspect to this holiday film. The sentiment stems from Trevor Learner's portrayal of the Santa, or Nick.
“Trevor Learner gave a remarkable performance as the Santa, and we find ourselves firmly backing him. We long for him to regain his magic. I wept three times during his scenes due to his captivating performance. He's so innocent and beautiful to watch,” Ayres said.
The family-man concluded, “And it's Santa, so we cheer him on. I think that's what I adore about this movie. The holiday season brings back the sentiments we had as children, and I'm experiencing this through my daughters now. It's a particularly enchanting season when you're young. I believe we enjoy these movies so much because they transport us back to our childhood, and transporting us back to our childhood through Santa is an entirely new level. And it's the magic and Christmas spirit that truly resonated in this film for me.”
The Santa Class debuted on Saturday, December 14, and will air throughout the season on the Hallmark Channel.
