Top Baby Names of 2024: Sophia and Noah Reign Supreme

Sophia and Noah once again claim the crown for the most popular baby names in Germany, according to the Gesellschaft für deutsche Sprache (GfdS) in the year 2024. In 2023, these baby names also reigned supreme among new parents. Andrea Ewels, GfdS director, offered her insight on the enduring popularity, "I reckon the lasting allure of these names is all in their sound."

New parents favored names that radiated beauty and charm – soft pitches with vowel endings like Noah, Sophia, Emilia, or Luca. Ewels delved deeper, "Moreover, these names tend to be short, straightforward, and globally recognized. They seem familiar, refreshing, and timeless – characteristics that charm many parents."

The GfdS has published an annual list of Germany's most popular given names since 1977. Data for the list comes from approximately 750 local registration offices, which supplied around 900,000 entries to the society. The GfdS proudly reported that they recorded almost 92% of all given names registered in Germany in 2024.
