Autumn's Arrival Brings Garden Tasks: Prune Roses, Plant Evergreens, Welcome Wildlife

Autumn has arrived, bringing cooler temperatures and vibrant colours to gardens across Allgäu. Residents are busy preparing their outdoor spaces for the winter, with tasks ranging from pruning roses to creating habitats for local wildlife.

As the first frost approaches, it's time to tend to your roses. Pruning should be done according to the shrub's growth type, with the goal of preventing snow damage. Meanwhile, dahlia lovers should store their tubers in a cool, moist basement once the frost has destroyed their leaves and flowers.

Hedge pruning is permitted from October 1st to February 28th, but remember to consider wildlife protection and federal bird protection laws. To welcome hedgehogs to your garden, create a leafy corner for them to nest in.

Now is also the ideal time to plant evergreen leaf and needle trees. Water them if it's dry to support their growth. For a burst of colour in the spring, pull weeds and plant bulb flowers like tulips, crocuses, or grape hyacinths, burying them twice as deep as their height.

If you're a desert tortoise enthusiast, consider creating a special area in your garden. Choose a sunny, well-drained spot with plenty of space, shelter, and access to shade.

Autumn is a busy season for gardeners in Allgäu. From caring for roses and dahlias to welcoming hedgehogs and planting evergreens, there's much to be done. By tending to our gardens now, we ensure a vibrant and welcoming space for both ourselves and local wildlife come spring.
