An Artist in Transition

Photographer Thomas Sing (45), once a name synonymous with reputable fashion magazines such as "Madame" and "Vogue", has now transitioned to Fine Art as he found the commercial aspect of his previous career unsatisfying. Sing, a graduate with diverse academic background in literature, philosophy, psychology, semiotics, and French literature from the University of Augsburg, has recently started working with oil paints on large canvases at home, in his apartment studio in Lechhausen.

His artistic journey began in May 2022, and since then, he has been rising as early as 4:30 AM for exercise before dedicating his mornings to painting. In the afternoon, he takes on the dual roles of gallery owner and publisher for his work. His wife, Chiara Padovan, an Italian native, supports him with translations and creating art books, allowing him to devote quality time to his six-year-old son Tankred, who shares his love for painting.

Sing's motivation for transitioning to Fine Art stemmed from his desire for creative expression, artistic freedom, and the opportunity to experiment beyond the constraints of traditional photography. He felt dependent on the technology and chemicals used in photography, which led him to find more control in painting.

Despite his newfound passion, Sing still accepts photography assignments and coexists this work with his painting. The convergence of their artistic efforts will be showcased in the upcoming vernissage "Longing for Humanity" on March 27 at 6 PM in the Ecken Galerie Augsburg (Elias-Holl-Platz 6), where drawings by Tilla von Gravenreuth and oil paintings by Sing will be exhibited together for the first time.

Sing's transition from photography to Fine Art represents a common pathway for photographers seeking greater creative freedom, deeper emotional expression, and broader artistic recognition.

In his apartment studio in Lechhausen, Thomas Sing, the former fashion photographer now venturing into Fine Art, has been dedicating his mornings to oil painting on large canvases, reflecting his home-and-garden lifestyle. As the gallery owner and publisher of his work, Sing continues to balance his career as a fine artist with photography assignments, emphasizing the lifestyle fusion of art, family, and work.
