Affordable Basic Hamster Food: Market Decline - Stock Adjustment

In the heart of summer 2025, shoppers in Germany and beyond are finding a pleasant surprise in their local supermarkets - the price of early potatoes has significantly dropped. The cost of potatoes per 100 kg, as of late August, stands at around €7.50, a decrease of approximately 74% compared to the same time last year when prices peaked at a staggering €55/100 kg[3].

This price drop is not a temporary blip, but a sustained trend. In the United States, retail prices for all potatoes fell by 2.8% during July 2024 to March 2025, with fresh potatoes dropping 6.6% to $0.89 per pound[5]. Forecasts suggest that potato prices may continue to decline modestly, with trading models estimating prices around €7.46/100 kg by the end of Q3 2025, and about €6.03/100 kg in 12 months[3].

The reasons behind this price decrease are multifaceted. Improved yields and favourable growing conditions have played a significant role. The 2025 U.S. potato crop is expected to reach or exceed the long-term trend yield, with nearly ideal weather for early crop development and planting finished ahead of schedule in major production areas[1].

Stable acreage has also been a contributing factor. Potato planting acreage has been relatively flat since 2013, with about 930,000 acres planted in 2024, avoiding sharp supply restrictions[1].

Consumer preferences and imports have also influenced the price drop. In some regions, consumers favour cheaper imported potatoes over locally grown ones due to price disparities, pushing prices down further locally[4].

The increased supply of fresh and processed potatoes has also contributed to downward price pressure, despite some tight supplies and logistics challenges in the processed potato products sector globally[2].

This price drop has made cooking on a budget easier, with many households cooking dishes with potatoes. The lower prices have even encouraged customers to build up their first supplies, although panic buying of potatoes is unnecessary[6].

The staple food, a popular vegetable among Germans, is not only becoming cheaper but also more accessible. The good harvest this year is the reason for the lower prices and increased availability of potatoes in supermarkets[7].

So, as you stroll down the vegetable aisle, take a moment to appreciate the lower prices and enjoy the shopping experience. Remember to store your potatoes properly at home to keep them fresh, and don't forget the joy of preparing a hearty potato salad or any other dish with this versatile and affordable staple food[8].
