A Wanted Programmer for an Old City Square in Riga's Historic District is Being Searched For

In the heart of Riga's Old Town, a significant competition has been announced for the redevelopment of Independence Square. This historic site, nestled next to the Bank of Latvia building and the Arsenāls exhibition hall, is an essential part of Latvia's capital, holding a rich and diverse history.

The competition aims to enhance the architectural and public space qualities of Independence Square, as the Republic of Latvia celebrates its 35th anniversary of independence. The project is a crucial step towards creating a place dedicated to this historic event in the capital.

The prize fund for the competition stands at EUR 20 000. The winning proposal should include plans for the renovation of greenery, walkways, lighting, and outdoor furniture, ensuring the square not only preserves its classical layout's cultural and historical value but also meets the functional needs for events and gatherings.

The "May 4 Declaration Club," an association of deputies of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Latvia who voted for the restoration of independence of the Republic of Latvia on 4 May 1990, initiated the name change of Independence Square. The square was renamed Independence (Neatkarības) Square in 2018.

The competition's submission deadline is set for June 10. Those interested in participating are advised to check official Riga city government or Latvian cultural heritage websites, or architectural competition platforms specific to Latvia, as such competitions are typically announced there with clear deadlines.

From the 18th to the 20th century, Independence Square was primarily used for military exercises and parades, as well as public events. In 1880, the Second Latvian General Song Festival was held at the square. During the Soviet occupation, the square was renamed Chernyshevsky Square, but in 1987, it was renamed back to Jēkaba Square.

The renovation of Independence Square is an opportunity to create a space that reflects Latvia's history, culture, and spirit, while also catering to the needs of its people and visitors. The competition is an exciting step towards transforming this iconic location in Riga.

The competition encourages proposals for a lifestyle that embraces home-and-garden elements, incorporating renovated greenery and outdoor furniture into the renovation of Independence Square, reflecting Latvia's cultural heritage. After the submission deadline on June 10, the prize fund of EUR 20 000 will be awarded to the proposal that best enhances outdoor-living spaces on Independence Square, creating a space that honors Latvia's history while catering to modern functional needs.
