A Century of Artistic Voices: One Hunded Artists Spanned Over a Century
Lehigh University's LUAG (Lehigh University Art Galleries) is set to host an exciting exhibition titled "Here and Now: 100 Years of LUAG, 100 Local Artists," running from Sept. 2, 2025, to May 22, 2026.
William Crow, Director of LUAG and a Professor of Practice in Art, Architecture, and Design, is spearheading this event. His vision for LUAG is to connect artists, neighbors, and people from all walks of life, making it a go-to site for a wide range of experiences.
In the fall of 2025, students from the ART275 Museum Collections and Exhibitions class at Lehigh University will be tasked with selecting local artworks for the LUAG collection. Funding for this project will come from university grants and departmental budgets. The chosen artworks are expected to "speak to the times in which we live," as stated by William Crow.
The exhibition will feature 100 works by local artists and will take place throughout the main gallery and Zoellner Arts Center. LUAG has developed a collection spanning 5,000 years of art from around the globe over the past 100 years.
To mark the beginning of the exhibition, a kickoff event called "Light Up LUAG" is planned for Friday, Sept. 19, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. This free event includes artmaking, food, music, and other activities.
Crow emphasizes that all art was contemporary at some point, highlighting the historical relevance of the exhibition. He hopes the exhibition will help everyone gain a better understanding of what we value at this specific moment in time.
The selected works will be purchased with money from Lehigh's Fine Arts Endowment and the Robin and Allan B. Kachel '71 Endowed Fund. Students in the ART275 class will also interview artists who participated in the "Here and Now" exhibition.
The exhibition serves as the catalyst for a series of receptions, lectures, community workshops, and special events. With the ART275 class already full as of June, there is a waiting list for those eager to be a part of this unique opportunity.
So, mark your calendars for Sept. 2, 2025, and join LUAG as they celebrate their local artists and the power of contemporary art.
